Turin, Italy based Guglielmo Castelli is influenced by scenography and his own studies as a theatrical  set designer. We can see this in his works which are like something out of the theatre ⎯ dramatic  and shadowy ⎯ setting a clear scene with striking colors and intriguing forms. The artist notes that he  is particularly interested in depicting the body ⎯ or bodies, often in posturers of constraint ⎯ as if  they are struggling against their inherently public display. Castelli’s work features figures who slip and  overlap on either neutral backdrops or unfamiliar landscapes; challenging the blurred boundaries of  the self and resisting a strict notion and distinction between subject and object. This ambiguous  nature then morphs into feelings of conviviality, astonishment, and wonder when characters melt into  gentle chromatic accents suspended in uncertain postures that reflect an unclear reality. Here, in The  Bold Emotional Corrections, we can see all these elements at work: the enigmatic and wonderfully  pink figure with limbs clutched close phasing through a series of glass shelves; the bold theatrical hat  and wine goblet; and the entrancing swirls and spirals of murky green paint. Castelli sets a scene of  drama, intrigue, and intimacy all confined to the canvas. The artist is represented by Mendes Wood  DM.
