Amoako Boafo introduced his friend, Otis Kwame Kye Quaicoe, to First while Boako was in residence  at The Cabin LA. After a few discussions about the king of cool, Barkley Hendricks, and the artist  Kerry James Marshall, First purchased Quaicoe some canvas and paint, urging him to create  something fresh and dynamic ⎯ and he did. Quaicoe painted his first “Black Cowboy” painting, for  which he has become particularly well known, and First was overwhelmed by his talent and creativity. Just a few months later, in December of 2019, Quaicoe was making paintings in preparation for his  own show at The Cabin LA. The popularity of his works made at The Cabin LA led to a solo show,  “Black Like Me,” at Roberts Projects in Los Angeles, a residency at the Rubell Museum, and  representation by Roberts Projects as well as Almine Rech. This work, a painting of über-cool Detroit based poet Joel Fluent Greene who Quaicoe met at Art Basel Miami that year, was included in this  first break-out exhibition at Roberts Projects.
