Painter Lenz Geerk lives and works in Düsseldorf, Germany and primarily produces portraits of  ambiguous figures often depicted in voids of color and non-descript landscapes. For Geerk, it is the  figure ⎯ devoid of context, and as ambiguous as they are, that provides meaning. While Geerk does  not focus on historical context or symbolism, he is influenced by the European art historical canon,  particularly in his painterly investigations of the human psyche. In his portraits, like Untitled, Geerk often renders figures in a void as if they are in limbo reflecting the internal psychological states of  moments of indecision, insecurity, or contemplation. Here, Geerk depicts a sensitive young man lying  beneath an Alexander Calder sculpture and playing with its red balancing ball like a cherry he is examining, almost as if he wanted to eat it. Indeed, contemplation is a crucial theme in this painting,  as the gesture symbolizes how we sometimes think about the puzzles, complexities, and infinities of  life! Geerk is represented by Roberts Projects and MASSIMODECARLO.
