Nicole Eisenman's oeuvre synthesizes various mediums including painting, sculpture, drawing, and printmaking. Her work seamlessly flows across these forms with each medium informing the other. Drawing inspiration from diverse sources, from queer culture to the Old Masters, Eisenman not only revitalizes long standing art historical traditions, but also interweaves them with contemporary humor and depth. Eisenman's adept fusion of technique and social commentary encourages introspection about our relationship with and within societal structures. In The Session, Eisenman depicts what she describes as her “worst nightmare:” a therapy session with her psychoanalyst father as her therapist. The artist appears stressed, staring at a phallic vase while her father checks the time, seemingly bored, demonstrating their strained relationship made tense by her father’s homophobia and refusal to accept Eisenman’s queerness.
