A Considered Choice by Toyin Ojih Odutola is a captivating example of the artist’s love for visual storytelling. The work was a part of an exhibition at the Hirshhorn titled A Countervailing Theory, which took the viewer on a journey through a fictional tale of a prehistoric African civilization. Ojih Odutola tells the story of the Eshu, a group of female warriors, and the Koba, a class of "humanoid men" who serve the Eshu. This society, predicated on gender and class-based oppression prohibits emotional or sexual relationships outside of one's gender. The story follows Akanke of the Eshu and Aldo of the Koba, who form a bond despite their differences and begin to develop romantic feelings for one another. In A Considered Choice, we see a tense moment between Akanke and her Eshu romantic partner, Konye. Akanke, heartbroken, at the false accusations of murder being levied at Aldo, looks intently at Konye who holds Akanke’s face in her hands, and advises Akanke against publicly revealing her feelings for Aldo, as it could implicate her. The fictional relationship between Akanke, her partner Konye, and her lover Aldo, exemplifies the complex reverberations that pressure relationships, both internal and external, when conflicts emerge.
